Napier: A village where every street and landscape has a story

Heritage isn't just buildings. In Napier, it's the stories, the streets, and the veld that surrounds them. The Napier Heritage and Conservation Body works to protect all three — architectural, cultural and natural — keeping the village's character in a changing world.

Who we are

Constituted by residents. Registered with Heritage Western Cape.

The NHCB was formed in 2019 by a group of residents committed to conserving everything in Napier of heritage, environmental, and socio-economic importance. A small steering committee registered the body with Heritage Western Cape, and later as a non-profit in March 2022.

We work alongside the Cape Agulhas Municipality and local associations to protect the village's character — from Sarel Cilliers Street to the Renosterveld at its edge.

What we protect

Our main areas of focus

PRECINCT — SAREL CILLIERS ST

Heritage assets

The Central Heritage Precinct contains all buildings 60 years and older, and is treated with care under CAM's Spatial Development Framework.
RESERVE — SKURWEKOP

Renosterveld

Critically endangered, with less than 5% of its former extent remaining. Napier's commonages hold some of the last intact patches on earth.
MOUNTAIN — SOETMUISBERG

Fynbos & water

The Klippedrift river corridor and Soetmuisberg fynbos hold some of the most species-diverse vegetation on the planet.
Est. 1838 — Klippedrift, Overberg

A picturesque village on the R316.

56km from Caledon. 16km from Bredasdorp. Napier sits at the heart of the Overberg, on the road most travellers take to L'Agulhas.

"April 12, 1838 is regarded as the founding date of the town — originally named Klippedrift, after the farm it was purchased from."
